Let's measure the environmental impact of digital products & applications.

On 28 September we are inviting the UK tech & IT community to an in-person workshop and knowledge-sharing session on measuring the environmental impact of digital products and applications.

We can't fix what we can't measure

How do we measure the energy use and environmental impact of software applications? And, how do we integrate measurements within continuous integration processes? At the event, you will learn about the open-source tools and methodologies that can help.

Collaborate and make an impact

Bring your projects and work together in a team to measure the environmental impact of something you care about โ€” learning while doing. Then share the improvements you have made to reduce it.

Develop best practices

When we measure, we learn how to improve. Together, we can find the best practices that others can apply to reduce the environmental impact of their applications and products.

Supported by

We are grateful for our community, partners, and supporters who have helped make this event happen.

  • 17:45: Doors open
  • 17:45 - 18:00: Welcome/arrival
  • 18:00 - 18:10: Opening (Neil Clark/TPX Impact) and welcome
  • 18:10 - 18:30: Digital environmental impact - what is it and how do we measure it?
  • 18:30 - 19:30: Break-out discussions:
  • Measuring - what tools do we need to measure at scale & with confidence?
  • Labeling - what does a label need to look like for digital products, services and applications?
  • 19:30 - 21:00: Networking, discussions & drinks
  • 21:00: Thanks, and see you next time!

How will we measure the environmental impact during the event?

Good question! We will share the work from a group of not-for-profit organizations, Boavizta, the ร–ko Institut, and the SDIA who have developed a test system (kindly provided by Blockheating) that is hosting a Gitlab Runner that has access to the environmental impact information of the underlying server. This runner can determine the energy use and other environmental impacts for each continuous integration build job. Using the open-source tooling we have developed in this test bed, each participant can measure the footprint of their own stack.

SDIA Knowledge Hub

Within our Knowledge Hub, you can find all the documentation related to the project, start with an overview here.

Learn more about the Boavizta Agent which is running on the test system in this Git Repository.

Our Approach

Work achieved to date on Boagent, APIs, and the measurements of the test system are based on our approach (still work-in-progress) on measuring the environmental impact of digital resource primitives.

We believe the key to reducing the environmental impact of the digital ecosystem is to make it transparent to the user of an application - to raise awareness of the environmental costs of their digital usage.
