Providing heat where it's needed

Heat utilization from data centers has been a vision for quite some time in the IT and energy industry. With increased environmental pressure to reduce waste and improve efficiency, and with technological developments, data center heat utilization is fast becoming a reality. Indeed we regard data center heat utilization as a pre-requisite to sustainable digital infrastructure.

At the same time, the energy industry is struggling to meet its climate goals. Especially in the heat sector where CO2-neutral thermal energy sources are still scarce. Such sources will be in even higher demand in the immediate future as governments across Europe attempt to decarbonize all sectors successfully.

This working group aims to identify and reduce barriers for successful heat recovery & utilization in the data center industry.

Work Packages

Current challenges

  • How do we "value" data center heat?
  • What do current heat price models look like?
  • What are the technical requirements to connect data center heat and building /district heating systems?
  • What would a regulatory environment look like that enables data center heat utilization?
  • How can we facilitate acceptance of heat utilization from data centers?
  • How can we develop the framework for service level and purchase agreements?
  • How do we integrate hyperscale data center heat into the wider energy system?

Working Group Goals

The overarching goal of this working group is for data center heat recovery and utilization to be applied at scale.

  • We have made heat utilization the industry standard
  • Heat becomes easy to value across the data center industry and across Europe
  • Data Center heat contributes susbstantially towards the energy transition goals, and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals
