How to make Digital Carbon Footprint more transparent?

Digitalization is taking over every area of daily life.

Yet, there is still no transparency around the true environmental impact of the digital economy. Current Industry metrics lack a holistic approach, e.g. PUE has helped optimize the data center facility but ignores both IT efficiency and carbon intensity of a data center. Likewise software and digital services often ignore their role in creating inefficient applications and architectures.

The SDIA Innovation Lab will bridge the divide between IT and Facility, and create a series of metrics that brings transparency to both sub-industries, as well as to the clients and consumers themselves.

This project compliments the SDIA’s “Roadmap to Sustainable Digital Infrastructure by 2030”.
